When the first Kings of Leon disc came out in ‘03 everybody immediately dubbed them “Southern Fried Strokes” and I went and bought the disc. It rocked, they started banging models and the rest is history. As much I dig that disc, I never really likened them to The Strokes but what do I know? I only write for an indie music blog.
Well, now I got your “Southern Strokes.” The Whigs are a three-piece band out of Athens, GA whose album came out last year but just now is starting to get some real press. Rolling Stone named them to their “10 Artists To Watch” last year before their disc came out due to some relentless touring.Well for once, Rolling Stone’s hype was justified. Parker Gispert has a raspy voice that fits the music perfectly. His approach is similar to Julian Casablancas but he isn’t doing an impression. He only really sounds like him when he’s getting worked up.
The track really hooked me was “Can’t Hear You Coming” which has a nice chill beginning, then starts working in some cowbell and horns while picking up the pace. Other top tracks include “Technology”, “Violet Furs” and “O.K, Alright.”

Soon enough, they’ll be banging models like the Followill boys. Simply put if you like raw guitar-driven music like The Strokes, Kings of Leon & The Replacements, you’ll love him.

hmm. Eh. And what about the Afghan Whigs? I already call them the Whigs. It’d be like a new band calling themselves the Stones. I’d suggest a name change for these guys.
Umm, like I know the Afghan Whigs still put stuff out, but like, do you really (I mean, really, really) consider them still relevant? And would you go see a show?
I think you’re stretchin it saying that The Afghan Whigs are either a) at all on the level as the Stones and b) in a category where they get to have a nick name. And for the record, I actually like The Afghan Whigs … it’s just that I don’t know anyone who’s heard of them or of the people who have who can name more than 1 song
Btw, The Whigs, here, above, from Athens GA not Afghanistan, rocked the night before last at the Rock N’ Roll Hotel. I’m about to post a slideshow if anyeone wants to check it out: http://www.rickphillipsjr.com.
